Jim S. Garza, M. D., completed his undergraduate
studies at Texas A&M University. He then
attended medical school at Baylor College of
Medicine in Houston, Texas. After graduation from
medical school, he was accepted into and
completed a highly competitive surgical residency
first in general surgery, and then in thoracic
and cardiac surgery at the Baylor College of
Medicine affiliated hospitals.
Board
Certification
The American Board of General Surgery certified
Dr. Garza in 1981. The American Board of Thoracic
Surgery has also certified him in 1984 and
recently re-certified in Thoracic surgery in
1998. His practice is focused on advanced
endoscopic transthoracic surgery and heart
surgery.
Interest
in Endoscopic Surgery and ETS:
With the introduction of endoscopic techniques in
this country, he recognized the enormous
potential of this new, less invasive type of
surgery. His interest led him to study these
techniques in the United States as well as in
Europe. He has been a pioneer in laparoscopic and
thoracoscopic surgery within his community. He
now focuses much of his practice on endoscopic
transthoracic sympathectomy.
Dr.
Garza's Personal Interest in Hyperhidrosis:
Dr. Garza has a mild case of hyperhidrosis that
diminished in his late teenage years. The
syndrome still involves his face. His mother and
his brother's young adult son are also afflicted
with this disorder. His mother has severe facial
blush as well as sweating. She is not a candidate
for an ETS due to advanced age. His nephew has
recently developed early signs of palmar and
pedal hyperhidrosis. Dr. Garza believes that his
personal background led him into learning more
about this syndrome.
